Thank God For Our Country

It goes without saying that national elections in the United States are history-making events. Those who write history books have their pen in hand waiting to see the outcome from Tuesday’s hustle and bustle. Boatloads of time and money have been spent for over a year preparing for this day. Stump speeches, road trips, debates… it all comes down to one day of voting.

This election heated up from the beginning and never really cooled off. Words flew like darts from one side to the other with most of America watching like spectators at Wimbledon. Many of us can relate to the poor little girl who was shown crying because she just wanted it all to be over. Right there with you, sister.

As you go to the polls on Tuesday, remember what an amazingly peaceful process this really is. Firearms and mortars do not determine who the next President will be. No matter who wins, we will not storm the White House with tanks and grenades. We choose our representatives because we have been persuaded by ideas, not by threats.

Thank God for this country. It is still a new idea that human beings can make peaceful, democratic transitions of power. The idea has caught on around the world, but Americans got the ball rolling. As Christians, we rejoice at the blessing of a free, peaceful country. What better conditions could there be for our primary work – reaching souls for Christ! Notice what Paul says:

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (2 Timothy 2:1-4)

Let us pray that this country continues to be a fertile field where people can make free choices… from the President they elect to the God they serve.
